- If it is too good to be true, it probably is. An amazingly brand new flute, sax or trumpet at a low price is worse than being useless because it may not function properly or not at all. This will make playing difficult and frustrating. If you are learning to play, nothing could be worse than this.
- Never ever buy cheap musical instruments without a brand name even if you are getting it dirt cheap. Cheap copies of brand instruments are not quality copies. You have to research brands well and you should only buy from respected manufacturers otherwise you will be wasting your money.
- When you are buying a used musical instrument, you should be prepared to shell out some additional money towards repairs and adjustments. Even if the seller says that the instrument looks perfect, he or she might not know the sort of repairs the instrument needs unless the seller is a repair shop. Repairs can be expensive so get the seller to check out the musical instrument in a repair shop and then talk to the shop yourself before buying it. Make sure you conduct a research on the make and model, its pros and cons and its value before making a final decision to buy. Also ask the history of the instruments because instruments that have been lying around disused for years can be in a bad shape or ex-rentals tend to have been used and misused quite a bit.
- If you are buying a vintage musical instrument, check out the make and model for quality. You might have to spend a significant amount for restoration so that the instrument is functional again. Make sure you factor in the cost of repair when making a buying decision. If the seller says that the instrument has just been restored, ask for proof of restoration.
