When jewelry is made from metals, the safety risk of the jewelry is determined by the amount of nickel present in the metal. Nickel is not bio-compatible and causes a lot of healing issues and hyper-sensitivity. Many people do not wear costume jewelry because of high nickel content.

Sterling silver jewelry actually contains just .925 percent silver while the balance is made up of other metals. In addition, jewelry made from sterling silver tarnishes if it comes in contact with air and body fluids. Many people love to wear gold jewelry but one has to consider high grades of gold as it contains less nickel. Solid gold jewelry is suited for well-healed piercing.

Even surgical stainless steel is used as material to make jewelry. 316L and 316LVM are the only grades of stainless steel that is acceptable for making body jewelry. If your new piercing does not heal when wearing surgical stainless steel jewelry, it could be because you have a low tolerance of nickel and you should opt for jewelry made either from titanium or niobium.

Niobium is heavier and stronger than surgical stainless steel and jewelry made from it is usually dipped in a chemical electrolyte and then exposed to an electrical current to create an array of colors. Niobium is non-reactive and many people with sensitivity issues can wear jewelry made from it without any problems.

The highest grade of metal used for making jewelry is titanium. It has virtually no nickel content and the metal is extremely strong. However, it is expensive but worth the price if you are suffering from hyper sensitivity to other metals.
